When it comes to create a neutral balance in colors and visual weight in a space, with accessories of course, my favorite thing to do is to add a bunch of plants or flowers. I am yet to meet a space that looks beautiful but lacks this little charm of life. Plants and flowers add life – they freshen up the whole space – they soothe the moods – and not to mention they calm down the nerves after long days. They are miraculous.
How to Decorate
I just mentioned creating balance in a space with plants. That is so true – they are a new neutral because they can calm down a space that has bold and dark colors, and yet at the same time; they can cheer up a space with neutral boring tones. Well, neutrals are not boring to me, I feel happier around neutral tones with a lot of character and texture…
Talk about sunlight – what a marvelous combination they make in a space with plants. I am not talking about sunlight being food for plants and flowers, but it is the look that the two together create in a room.
Nature always affects our nerves in all positive ways. Its about balance and creating a neutral effect that looks great to both eyes and heart.
Add a couple of plants or a beautiful vase full of flowers to your home and see the magic happen.
Better Homes and Gardens
I am noticing some great and gorgeous woven goodies in magazines these days. It seems like they’re trending and it’s great to see that happen because woven handmade things for home have always been my favorite. They look beautiful, they look natural, they have a personal touch and last longer than we think.
Every home evolves with time, things get changed…updated…replaced; but there are some things that not only occupy space in your home but in your heart as well and become a part of your life. After years or even decades, they still hold their place and make you happy as they did when they first became a part of your life.
My mom was presented with a handmade rope basket by our gardener’s wife, when we were transferred from one station to another some twenty eight years back. She made it herself! We still have it and its as useful to us, and precious too, as it was back then…we still love it, though it now shows signs of times. Its an amazing piece made with love – its beautiful, it looks natural, has a personal touch and been with us for a long time.
Color is a mystery; as beautiful as anything could be. The more we learn about color, the more it unfolds, and the more it becomes interestingly complicated – hence, another mystery.
As I spent the weekend reading about color and its basics, I fell in love with decorating using tone-on-tone color. Imagine how interesting it would be to decorate with different shades of just one when you have hundreds to choose from. When on one side, creating palettes with two or more colors could be fun, playing around with shades of just one color is even more interesting.
Its a little tricky to decide if you could just go with tone-on-tone color in a space or not, because if at all it turns out to be wrong (!), the space could become as boring as anything could be. But yet again, if done rightly, imagine how gorgeous that space would look – as gorgeous as anything could be.
Knowing that, I have tone-on-tone color on my mind right now, and I wonder if I could just figure out a few tips to decorate like that in a few days to come…
