A Neutral + Pleasant Farmhouse

It was through my regular visits to Country Living that I came across this simply gorgeous farmhouse and there was no reason not to love it; not at all – it’s so calm and pleasant that I think I just found the kind of a place to spend the summers with lots of books to read. It could be one great place to step away from the routine and admire nature to your heart’s content, listen to the silence, drink lots of coffee, write all day and just spend some time alone and just read, read and read.

Country Living is so beginning to become one of my favorite go-to spots for inspiration; it sometimes seems to resonate with me as I am on a quest to find my own particular style in design…

Cottage Style: The Essential Elements

I shared here yesterday that I’ve been admiring cottage style decor a lot lately and promised to come back today with the most essential elements in designing like a cottage. But before I start with my latest obsession, how have you all been? Hope you’ve already started planning to welcome spring in your home with warm hearts and sweetest of smiles (it’s just a few weeks away). Oh, what a delight spring is and how it is in-harmony with cottage style because it is casual and simple and happy; decorated with mere love with lots of natural accents around the whole space. So, shall we start with today’s essential elements (my favorites)? Here goes.

Pretty fabrics. Cottage style puts a lot of focus on fabrics. Well, that is true for every style because fabrics bring warmth and style and texture to a space and they too, tell a lot about your taste. So, one has to be careful with the choice of fabrics. But you know, fabrics used in cottage style are the prettiest to look at. It is usually a plain neutral color as  the base and then small scale floral patterns or thin strips are used around the space. It gives such a subtle and simple texture. And don’t forget about the slip covers; they are also one of the signature elements in a cottage style.

Warm woods and woven textures. I’ve always loved warm woods in a home. They create a warm and elegant look and woven things like baskets, mats and rugs bring the joys of nature in and create a more informal and calm feel in a room.

Rustic characters. Cottage style is known for mixing new with the rustic. Bringing in a piece that has seen times over the years could add a lot of character to a room. It not only is casual but comforting as well. But, I’ve seen a lot of inspiration in spaces decorated in a cottage style that do not necessarily have a weathered piece. However, it would be good to keep something that you don’t want to let go. It would fit perfectly.

Open shelves (built-ins or not). These are my favorite in this style. Seriously, I am so lazy that I always find it a lot easier to have access to most-used things instantly. Did I just tell a secret? Anyway, that is such a time saver and nevertheless, open shelves are always a perfect spot to display your favorite things that reflect you in anyway.

Plants and flowers. Do bring in live plants and flowers in your home to bring that warm and happy feel of a cottage style. It’s all about letting the nature shine inside your home. It mainly is inspired by nature, remember? Pretty planters in different sizes and styles will make a room more lively. How nature creates a sense of love and life in a room amazes me.

Cottage style basically focuses on casual and more informal accents that have a simple and natural feel to them. Ask any designer, and they will tell you it’s all about bringing the beauty and joy in from the outside.

While you enjoy the pleasantness in there, I’ll be back tomorrow with some thoughts on the colors in cottage style.

A small living room to love

Hello all! I spotted this living room last week and I had to share it. This cutest-of-all space is owned by Brittany Robertson who also runs a lifestyle blog and is a lover of all things charming. I’m really impressed by the way she used every inch of this space.

Ever since I saw this simple and elegant living room featured in Style Me Pretty Living, I just loved it! It has both style and functionality packed in a small square space. Just in time when I’m gathering up ideas and inspiration for our own living room; and you guessed it, its a square too, and that too by the window (welcome natural light), calling for a redo job!

Living rooms are the busiest in the house, whose isn’t? And they are super multifunctional with just about everything happening in there, which makes it really important to design them that way but it sometimes become a little tricky to make everything fit in a small space while making them stylish too. Here’s where inspiration comes into play.

I dream of a small and sophisticated living room in neutral tones and soft blue and grey, with little and subtle pops of color carefully used around the space. But most of all, it’s the ease in traffic, flexible seating and smart storage solutions that I care. Well, what can you say, it’s living room where living happens all day and even when the architecture allows, you can keep track of all other happenings around the house from there. Even better.

Color Calmness at Home

When I saw this beautiful and calm space on Domino yesterday, it was not a surprise that I was instantly drawn to it. And as I read on, I found out why. This amazingly calm and serene place belongs to Abby Larson; founder of Style Me Pretty, who had been in love with neutrals (something that we share) for a long time, but now she wanted to try and welcome some color in her home – but in a careful manner.

This is exactly what I am drawn to these days. I love neutrals, but sometimes they seem boring, so I’d love to incorporate soothing shades of color in small doses, so that they don’t dominate but create interest in a space. This place is a perfect example to inspire and spark ideas to pull together a space keeping both the love of neutrals and playing around with colors. Its so overwhelming to see how all kinds of happy shades make this whole place look gorgeous and happy. Makes me smile…
